The knee joint is called Janu Sandhi in Sanskrit; hence the name Janu Basti is given to the proceduredone on knee joints. In this the knee joint is bathed with warm medicated oil or freshly prepared herbal decoction. Depending on the condition it can be practiced over both the knee joints or on one knee joint.

We are living an era of dryness. The dryness is an impact of excessive movements and strains and dryness when appear together, this brings complications. These complications are of two types- speedy ageing process and excessive wear and tear. Wherever movements are present, we need to maintain greasy nature. It might be the axial and tyre location of a machine or the spine and joints in case of human body. The dryness causes stiffness in the muscles.

This leads to several problems in the cervical spine. This can be loss of lordosis or spondylytic changes, everything leads to spinal disc problems. When it is about cervical problems, Greeva Basti- when done properly work to wonders.

Greeva Basti comprises two words. Greeva and Basti. In this Greeva stands for neck and Basti is to hold somewhere. Therefore it translates into to hold something on the neck.

Neck is almost 90% muscles on the back side. The spinal vertebrae are very small in size. When these muscles are strained excessively. It leads to the problems with the vertebrae. The pressure caused by the strain, reduces space between two vertebrae. This leads to lack of blood supply to the spinal discs. Once blood supply is not proper, it causes degeneration in the spinal disc. This degeneration can lead to any condition of the spinal disc- herniated disc, bulged disc, protruded disc or disc extrusion in the cervical region. Thus it is important to maintain the normal tone of the muscles and ligaments. Only after that we can expect the normal spinal discs.

Researchers believe it is not just old age, but a sedentary lifestyle is responsible for chronic back pain. While there are painkillers available in the drug stores that provide quick relief for the time being, Ayurvedic treatment of the pain is better.

Painkillers provide relief only for a shorter period and there is a high chance of re-occurrence of the pain. Back pain needs a prolonged treatment. Hence, dependence on allopathic drugs for a longer period can have side-effects on other organs. Ayurvedic remedies are harmless and are effective in eradicating the pain completely. The word Kati refers to the lower abdomen area or the waist. The process of holding warm oil in the region that has been affected is known as Basti. Therefore, Kati Basti refers to the process of applying warm Ayurvedic oil on the waist area or other portions of the spine. In this process, the patient is asked to lie down on the bed and then the oil is applied on the affected part, especially the lumbosacral region. Thereafter, a reservoir is built around the affected area.

The reservoir is of black gram dough. Medicinal oil is poured into it. The temperature of the oil is kept constant and it is made to pour on the body for some 30 -40 minutes. Finally, the oil is gently massaged over the body.

Shirodhara, a form of treatment, is a word which comprises of two terms ‘shiro’ meaning head and ‘dhara’ meaning pouring in s tream or sprinkling. This treatment has immense impact on the nervous system. It immediately acts to calm and relax your mind and has a cleansing effect on the nerves.

Shirodhara is extremely beneficial for people suffering from imbalance of Vata and Pitta. A person suffers from feelings of fear, insecurity and worry when his/her Vata is out of balance. Imbalance of Pitta can cause a person to become angry, frustrated, irritated and even cause him to lose the sense of right and wrong. Shirodhara involves the use of such liquids that help to counter the negative effects of the out-of-balance doshas or conditions. The liquid soothes and pacifies the doshas when applied to the forehead, scalp and nervous system.

Shirodhara not only helps to reduce stress and soothe the nervous system but it has other beneficial effects as well. It can treat insomnia, bring relief from migraines, lowers high blood pressure, decreases hair loss, reduces stress and even helps to increase mental focus and concentration. In this procedure oil is poured over the forehead as this area has a large number of nerve endings and therefore is highly sensitive. Vibrations are created on the forehead by the pressure of the oil.

The oil penetrates into the nervous system after saturating the forehead and scalp. The oils used in this procedure improve blood circulation to the brain by vasodilating all the channels. It also helps to reduce the level of stress hormones like adrenaline and nor adrenaline and therefore provides respite from anxiety and related disorders. The entire procedure enables the body, mind and nervous system to experience a state of deep rest, similar to the state a person arrives at after meditation.
